Sentinel Event Alerts identify
specific sentinel events, describe common underlying causes and
suggest steps to prevent occurrences. JCAHO surveyors assess
the accredited organization's
familiarity with and use of Sentinel Event Alert information. Accredited
organizations are expected to:
- Review and consider relevant information from each alert
- Incorporate relevant information provided by an alert when
designing or redesigning processes
- Evaluate systems in light of information in an alert
- Consider implementing relevant suggestions or reasonable alternatives
provided in the alert
These recommendations are part of the joint commission's
National Patient Safety Goal.
