Investigation of fires reported to ECRI, FDA and the joint commission show that 75 percent of all reported surgical fires involve oxygen, which creates an oxygen-enriched environment.  In 70 percent of surgical fires the ignition source was the electrosurgery unit, which is why manufacturers discuss fire risks of this equipment. Lasers account for 10 percent of the fires.
