Heat increases the oxidation rate
of a fuel-oxygen mixture until combustion occurs. Most fuels burn
in the gaseous state and ignite when the vapors have mixed with
oxygen. These vapors are produced when heat evaporates liquids
and vaporizes solids. Fuels that burn completely convert into oxides
such as water, carbon dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. Fuels that
burn incompletely convert into toxic substances such as carbon
monoxide, acidic free hydrogen and soot.
