Develop Team Fire Plan

Circulating RN

  • Call Code Red
  • Remain with patient
  • Extinguish fire
  • Provide supplies
  • Assist anesthesia
  • Unplug electrical equipment
  • Know escape routes
  • Arrange patient transport
  • Evacuate if necessary

2006 AORN Recommended Practices

The circulating RN should:

  • Ensure patient safety by remaining with him/her and providing comfort
  • Activate the fire-alarm system and call the fire code to alert all necessary personnel
  • Extinguish small fires or douse them with liquid if appropriate
  • Remove any burning material from the patient or sterile field and extinguish it on the floor
  • Prevent fire from spreading to shoes or clothing by not stepping on it
  • Collaborate with anesthesia on need to turn off medical gas shut-off valves
  • Unplug electrical equipment
  • Know safest escape routes
  • Obtain a transport stretcher if necessary
  • Remove IV solutions from poles and place them with the patient for transport
  • Assist anesthesia in preparing patient for transport
