Eschar
buildup on the active
electrode can ignite, especially in an oxygen-enriched atmosphere.
Furthermore, buildup increases resistance
on the tip and can contribute to arcing. Consequently, eschar should
consistently be removed from the active electrode tip. Use of a
coated electrode facilitates removal of eschar. When using a coated
electrode, however, always follow manufacturers recommended power
settings to minimize fire risk.
