Use active electrodes insulated by the manufacturer

Electrodes with safety sleeves

Keep gauze sponges wet during procedures identified as high risk for fire. These procedures include those in the oral cavity, in the head and neck area, and in cavities that may contain oxygen or a flammable gas such as methane or hydrogen.

Do not shield an electrosurgery tip with a red rubber catheter or other materials not approved for this use. In the presence of an oxygen-enriched atmosphere, the red rubber catheter or plastic can ignite. Electrodes that come pre-shielded are available from electrosurgery manufacturers.
