Minimize Oxidizers ::

  • Stop O2 one minute before use of ESU
  • Prevent accumulation of O2 and N2O under surgical drapes
  • Verify all breathing circuits are leak-free
  • Use air or < 30% O2
  • Use pulse oximeter to determine O2 saturation and need for supplemental O2
Oxygen monitoring devices

Make every effort to minimize the buildup of oxygen and nitrous oxide beneath drapes and in the oropharynx. For ophthalmic procedures, tent the operative and full-length body drapes from the end of the nose to facilitate the dissipation of gases. The use of an auxiliary support, such as a Mayo stand, may be necessary to achieve adequate tenting.

Verification that all oxygen circuits are leak free should be standard procedure before each surgical procedure.

The use of a pulse oximeter is standard practice. This assists the anesthesia provider in determining whether or not the administration of supplemental oxygen is necessary.

The ECRI recommendation is to stop supplemental oxygen one minute prior to and during the use of electrosurgery. They also recommend using room air or oxygen less than 30 percent for delivery to the face.
