An airway fire is a life-threatening event. Using a water-based rather than oil-based lubricant on endotracheal tubes is indicated.

The use of plastic endotracheal tubes should always be avoided during airway procedures. Use of laser-safe endotracheal tubes for airway procedures will greatly reduce the patient's risk of injury.

Also, inflate the endotracheal tube with methylene blue-tinted water or saline during airway procedures. If the cuff should begin to leak, the anesthesia provider will have an easier time identifying the presence of a leak.
