The fire can be extinguished by disrupting the fire triangle, by diminishing or removing one or all of its sides. A small fire can be smothered with a wet sponge or towel, or the burning material can be removed from the patient. Patting the fire out with the hand is not advisable because the gloved hand could be burned.
