If the fire is not contained evacuation will be necessary. If the sprinkler system activates or the room fills with smoke, the patient should be evacuated, if possible, on the operating table. The oxygen and nitrous oxide line to the burning operating room should be shut off to prevent reignition of the fire. Electrical equipment involved in the fire should be disconnected from the power source. Also, electrical equipment that is on fire should not be doused with water. According to the ECRI, if the fire progresses past one minute, the entire operating suite should be evacuated. While the fire department is responding, other surgical teams should prepare their patients for immediate evacuation from the areas of danger. The doors of the burning operating room must be closed to reduce the spread of smoke and fire.
