Prevention and Safety
During Surgical Procedures

Fire safety during surgery is an ongoing concern of all members of the surgical team.  Operating room fires can be devastating, resulting in documented patient deaths. It's essential that surgical team members know what to do in the event of an operating room fire. For that reason, continuing education on fire safety is critical. The Sentinel Event Alert issued by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) in June 2003 has greatly increased the awareness among perioperative team members of the importance of fire prevention.
